Croydon Crematorium was opened in 1937 and with approximately 2,000 cremations per year has carried out over 150,000 cremations in total. It can be accessed from either Thornton Road (A23) or Mitcham Road (A236); both entrances lead to the large crematorium car park and office. Cremation services occur Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm at 45 minute intervals and on Saturday from 9.30am to 11.45am.
The crematorium has two chapels. The West Chapel has a traditional design, seats about 80 people on wooden pews and has a catafalque that descends upon committal. The East Chapel is more contemporary in design and will seat about 130 in linked padded seats; allowing the seating arrangement to be adjusted, if necessary. At the point of committal a choice of two curtains close to either fully or partially obscure the coffin, or if preferred, the curtains can be left open. These chapels are adjacent to the large car park; directions to which are signposted throughout the grounds.
The cemetery and crematorium grounds are maintained in partnership with Vale Contracts Ltd.
Recently Mitcham Road Cemetery was awarded the 2011/2012 Green Flag Award; given in recognition of achieving the national standard for parks and green spaces. Mitcham Road Cemetery and Croydon Crematorium also received a "Winner of Special Awards for Innovation 2011" accolade from Green Flag, a gold award in 2011 and again in 2012 from London in Bloom.
